How To Use White Sage To Cleanse Your Home

white sageAfter the addition of our home was finished I had my amazing/spiritual friend come over for a visit. To my surprise she brought along a bundle of sage to burn in all corners of our “new” home for a cleansing. The Native Americans believed the practice of burning sage around your home would purify and clear negative energy in that space. I have never heard of, nevertheless experience such a thing. I was completely in awe of the whole experience. She is a master of the sage cleanse, also kown as smudging. So I asked as many questions as I could think of and of course took notes to share with you. So here is how to use white sage to cleanse your home.

What you need

  1. Lighter or matchshell
  2. Heat proof bowl or shell (Abalone Shells are most commonly used for spiritual beliefs.)
  3. Sage bundle

How to smudge

  • First of all it is a good idea to crack some windows to allow the smoke to have a place to escape so your fire alarms won’t go off!
  • Then you want to light the end of your sage bundle and gently tap the flame out in your heat proof bowl or shell. Be sure to continue to let the sage smoke.
  • Some people like to start this ritual or cleanse with circling the sage around their own body to cleanse self of negative energy and welcome positive energy.
  • Wave the smoke (with your hand or a feather) into the corners of each room around the house and across the doorways. It is common to start at the front door and work your way around the house and end at the front door. This way at the end of your smudging you can open the front door and let the remainder of the smoke exit through the door along with any negative energy.
  • smokeOnce you are satisfied with your “cleanse”, you can allow the sage bundle to burn out, run the sage under water, press the sage into sand or press the remainder out in your bowl or shell.
  • It is very important to also repeat a mantra, prayer or blessing while waving the sage smoke into the air. For example you can say: “Please send any negative energy to the heavens for healing and transformation.” “I ask the negative energies to leave and welcome the positive energies in.” Basically you can say anything that will make yourself and your personal space feel wonderful.

Give it a try

You can perform this “cleanse” inside or outside of your home, in your garage, car or place of business. Some people believe in smudging their home before they put it on the market. Although I am new to smudging I do believe in the power of positive thinking. Your mind is an incredibly powerful tool. If you choose to “cleanse” yourself or your personal space keep only positive thoughts. In turn you will have and love the positive outcome. Give it a try. There is no right or wrong, just set a good intention!

Happy Smudging 🙂E Signature photo signature_1_zpslt0lwfsm.gif

Why Coconut Oil Is The Best For Oil Pulling

oilYou typically can use sesame oil, sunflower oil, olive oil or coconut oil. Organic, cold-pressed, unrefined Coconut oil is a better choice than other oils because it has antifungal and antimicrobial properties. This will kill off any bad bacteria in your mouth and support the growth of good bacteria.

How To Oil Pull

  1. Lightly swish 1-2 teaspoons of coconut oil into mouth, between teeth for 15-20 minutes. (If you only have 5 minutes, 5 is better then nothing!)
  2. Spit oil into a plastic cup to throw away. (Spitting the oil into the sink or toilet can clog the pipes.)toothbrush
  3. Rinse mouth out with water…some people prefer warm salt water to help ensure they get rid of the toxins your oil pulled out.
  4. Brush your teeth well!

How Long Until You See A difference?

It takes about a month for some people to experience dental repair and/or healthier gums. Other people notice a positive change in their breath and feel like their mouth is cleaner within a week!

Side Effects Of Oil Pulling

The feeling of extra mucus in the nose or throat can occur because swishing the oil in your mouth releases sinuses and can cause drainage. This will not hurt you. To help ease this possibe discomfort, simply blow your nose before swishing the oil in your mouth. It is also common to gag on the taste or texture of the oil. If your coconut oil solidified, warm it up to make it thinner and easier to get used to. Swish with your head slightly leaned forward to suppress your gag reflex.

Add Essential Oils

Essential oils carry some of the most potent antibacterial and antifungal properties allowing your body to reap the benefits of the antioxidant and medicinal powers.

Add 3-5 drops of: oregano, lemon, wild-orange, or peppermint essential oil to feel fresh and have a change of taste.

Add 3-5 drops of:cinnamon, tea tree or clove oil when you are feeling ill or fighting an infection. These essential oils kill off bad bacteria.

Frankincense essential oil helps support immunity and lavender essential oil helps promote healthy gums.

When To Oil Pull

Now you may ask, “When in the world am I going to find time for 15-20 minutes to oil pull?!?!” Let me give you a few ideas. Try oil pulling while taking your shower, washing your face, applying your makeup, shaving, reading the paper or catching up with the TV news.

Give yourself a goal of oil pulling at least 3-4 times a week. Everyday would be great! Just by healing your mouth and improving your oral health you can improve your overall health as well. Isn’t that a wonderful thing!

Are You Getting Enough Sleep? Six Ways To Feel Well Rested.

sleepingExhaustion. Something I am very familiar with. I know I am not alone. Between keeping my company running, the laundry done, meals bought and made and my most important “job” taking care of my wonderful children…which I might add have a better social life than I do, it is a challenge to keep my energy levels up. We are also currently coming to the final days of a 8 month house renovation, which has been exciting yet taxing. I know for a fact that I am not getting my well needed eight hours of sleep. Are you getting enough sleep?

I Come To Life At Night

Does this sound like you? I am a night owl by nature. I always have been. Seven PM rolls around and I am like woman watching tvBAM the energizer bunny. I am ready to clean, do a little workout, plan my “need to accomplish” list for the next day. There is something I find so peaceful when everyone is asleep in my home and I can watch whatever I want completely uninterrupted. But wake me up earlier in the morning than I need to and I am not a happy camper.

How I Feel When I Am Not Well Rested

There are nights when I am constantly waking up, which leaves me an exhausted “slug” the next day. I despise that feeling when I am so tired it takes everything in me to lift my arm up just to take a sip of water. On days that I
bedam completely wiped out I actually feel anxious and sad. I am left with no choice but to take a nap…that is if I am lucky enough to fit it into my busy schedule. And yes, as much as I am a night owl I do have to remind myself to hit the hay at a reasonable time so I can actually function the next day.

Six Ways To Feel Well Rested

So I have figured out six ways that will help you feel more alive after a couple nights of restless sleep.

  • First of all, if you can manage time in your day to take a nap twenty minutes is all you really need to get a second wind.
  • Take a cold face cloth and pat it on your face to perk right up.
  • Drinking a cup of naturally caffeinated teatea cup is a great way to get you going.
  • Amazingly enough a brisk walk helps lift energy levels and I promise you will feel great afterwards as well! If at all possible walk in the morning and soak in the sunlight to wake your brain up.
  • Don’t forget to drink your water! Staying well-hydrated helps prevent the effects of insomnia.
  • If at all possible, try to get 8 hours of sleep each night!

Please share with us ways you are able to feel well rested 🙂
