Oil pulling, also known as “gundusha” or “kauala” has been done for thousands of years as an ancient ayurvedic natural remedy to improve both oral and overall health. Why Coconut Oil Is The Best For Oil Pulling
You typically can use sesame oil, sunflower oil, olive oil or coconut oil. Organic, cold-pressed, unrefined Coconut oil is a better choice than other oils because it has antifungal and antimicrobial properties. This will kill off any bad bacteria in your mouth and support the growth of good bacteria.
How To Oil Pull
- Lightly swish 1-2 teaspoons of coconut oil into mouth, between teeth for 15-20 minutes. (If you only have 5 minutes, 5 is better then nothing!)
- Spit oil into a plastic cup to throw away. (Spitting the oil into the sink or toilet can clog the pipes.)
- Rinse mouth out with water…some people prefer warm salt water to help ensure they get rid of the toxins your oil pulled out.
- Brush your teeth well!
How Long Until You See A difference?
It takes about a month for some people to experience dental repair and/or healthier gums. Other people notice a positive change in their breath and feel like their mouth is cleaner within a week!
Side Effects Of Oil Pulling
The feeling of extra mucus in the nose or throat can occur because swishing the oil in your mouth releases sinuses and can cause drainage. This will not hurt you. To help ease this possibe discomfort, simply blow your nose before swishing the oil in your mouth. It is also common to gag on the taste or texture of the oil. If your coconut oil solidified, warm it up to make it thinner and easier to get used to. Swish with your head slightly leaned forward to suppress your gag reflex.
Add Essential Oils
Essential oils carry some of the most potent antibacterial and antifungal properties allowing your body to reap the benefits of the antioxidant and medicinal powers.
Add 3-5 drops of: oregano, lemon, wild-orange, or peppermint essential oil to feel fresh and have a change of taste.
Add 3-5 drops of:cinnamon, tea tree or clove oil when you are feeling ill or fighting an infection. These essential oils kill off bad bacteria.
Frankincense essential oil helps support immunity and lavender essential oil helps promote healthy gums.
When To Oil Pull
Now you may ask, “When in the world am I going to find time for 15-20 minutes to oil pull?!?!” Let me give you a few ideas. Try oil pulling while taking your shower, washing your face, applying your makeup, shaving, reading the paper or catching up with the TV news.
Give yourself a goal of oil pulling at least 3-4 times a week. Everyday would be great! Just by healing your mouth and improving your oral health you can improve your overall health as well. Isn’t that a wonderful thing!
